This week Marcus had his six week immunisation.
It all went well and he's been fine afterwards, although we also found out he has a minor ear infection. So he's now on antibiotics.
He seems to be doing a lot of growing at the moment - feeding constantly and getting heavy!
A blog site for Shelley and Karl to update friends and family on them and the boys.

Five weeks old
It's been a slow week on the blog front - we've been focused on the baby, getting out and about and haven't had much time to blog. We're starting to get used to the baby thing a bit more so should start updating again more...
Marcus' sleeping is improving steadily - every day is still pretty random and there's not much consistency but there are some common elements - 3-5 hour sleep at night, followed by short feed, then 3 more hours sleep. So we're starting to get more restful nights, and we were told at the Plunket centre in Lyall Bay that he clearly distinguishes between night and day now.
A source of frustration for Shelley is the lack of consistency in feeding - some days will be 4 huge feeds, others 10 really small feeds. He's also getting more fussy in his feeds.
Big trips out this week included: a session with the cranial osteopath; a trip to the Plunket centre to see how we're going with the feeding (he's putting on weight so everything is definitely going well, and boy is he putting on the weight!); and going to the Shoe Clinic so dad could buy some new running shoes.
He got to meet his paternal grandparents, which was great as it gave us a chance to spend some time together as we went out for lunch for a couple of hours. Mum also went out to a wedding for a coupld of hours on Saturday - her first chance to do something for herself in over five weeks (or in over 10 months, depending on how you look at it!).
Our big milestone this week is me (Karl) going back to work. I'm looking forward to it in some ways, but am not looking forward to it in many others...

Jolanda left holding the baby
It was great to catch up with John and Jolanda today. Jolanda got to cuddle Marcus for a while and looked right at home ;-)
Marcus meets some relatives
Last weekend Marcus started to meet his relatives. His grandparents from New Plymouth came down for a couple of nights (on their way to his grandparents in Cromwell). While his grandparents were here, one of his aunties came around with his cousins Drew (pictured) and Harley.
Marcus meets a new friend (3)
Last weekend Marcus met two new friends - Asher and Maia. Asher is holding Maia because she's pretty small - born 10 hours before Marcus!
Hopefully Marcus' new friends will move to Wellington (hint, hint - Christine, your dad is happy for me to put the pressure on!).

Marcus goes to sleep
One of Marcus' favourite sleeping positions is on his dad. In the first month, this has been the best way to get him to sleep at night - putting him in his basket before he's been on dad for 2 hours would wake him up. Consequently dad has seen a lot of bad late night movies.
Thankfully, his sleeping is improving and he only needs to be on dad for 15 minutes now.

Happy Birthday to Marcus!
Marcus turned one month old today. He's tried the rock'n'roll lifestyle this week - drinking until he vomits (on several occasions) and not sleeping. It's all a bit early for us - we were hoping to deal with this in about 18 years, over the phone, with him in Dunedin and us in Wellington.

Sleep - what's that?
3 days of hell appear to be over! Since the trip to the hospital, Marcus has been in a cycle of feed, sleep for 20 minutes, cry for two hours, then start again. As a result, everyone is very sleep deprived and their hasn't been much love in the house!
Our fantastic midwife (or lead maternity carer, to use the jargon) suspects that on Saturday he had really bad wind. As a result his cycles he was developing got badly disrupted and he almost forgot how to sleep. She gave us some tips to try and get him to sleep and ways to focus on keeping him asleep. He went to sleep at 7pm, and at 12.14am now, he's been asleep for over 5 hours. I sent Shelley to bed when he went to sleep and she's still there. Which is the longest she's slept since Marcus was born. So tomorrow looks like being a great day!

Marcus meets a new friend (2)
On Saturday morning Marcus met Sarah and Sarah's mum Catherine. The photo shows that neither Marcus nor Sarah are particularly interested in cameras at the moment!
